The Home Edit Life

The Home Edit Life: The No-Guilt Guide to Owning What You Want and Organizing Everything by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin

Summary: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * The authors of The Home Edit and stars of the Netflix series Get Organized with The Home Edit teach you how to apply their genius, holistic approach to your work life, on-the-go necessities, and technology.

At home or on the go, you don't have to live like a minimalist to feel happy and calm. The Home Edit mentality is all about embracing your life--whether you're a busy mom, a roommate living with three, or someone who's always traveling for work. You just need to know how to set up a system that works for you.

In the next phase of the home organizing craze, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin go beyond the pantry and bookshelf to show you how to contain the chaos in all aspects of your life, from office space and holiday storage to luggage and pet supplies. Get to know your organizing style, tailor it to your family's lifestyle, and lead the low-guilt life as you apply more genius ideas to every aspect of your life.

Clea and Joanna are here to remind you that "it's okay to own things" in the quest for pretty and smart spaces. With The Home Edit Life, you'll soon be corralling phone cords, archiving old photos, arranging your phone apps by color, and packing your suitcase like a pro.

Angie’s comments: There are a lot of photographs, and each photograph has a explanation of what, how and why they organized it that way. While I can't implement their system for my whole house yet (based on money and space), I can certainly use their ideas to organize a drawer or two and build from there.

Recommended for readers interested in organizing (and not necessarily getting rid of things).

Powershift

Powershift: Transform Any Situation, Close Any Deal, and Achieve Any Outcome by Daymond John

Summary: The bestselling author and star of ABC's Shark Tank reveals how to master the three prongs of influence- reputation, negotiation, and relationships.

Have you ever wanted to make a big change in your life but weren't sure where to start? In Powershift, Daymond John shares the answer. To take control of your destiny and drive the change you want to see, you need to lay the groundwork so you're prepared to seize every opportunity that comes your way. And that means mastering

  • Influence-make an impression- Develop a reputation that highlights what you stand for.
  • Negotiation-make a deal- Hone a win-win negotiating style.
  • Relationships-make a connection last- Nurture those connections you make along the way.

Through never-before-told stories from his life and career, Daymond shares the lessons that got him to where he is today- from how he remade his public image as he transitioned from clothing mogul to television personality, to how he mastered the negotiation strategies that determine whether deals are won or lost "in the tank," to his secrets for building long-lasting-and profitable-relationships with founders and brands.

Throughout the book, some of the world's most successful personalities reveal how they shifted their power in meaningful ways-

Kris Jenner on determining your value-"You don't have to go ask somebody else for permission. You have the power to be able to stick to your guns and demand your worth."

Mark Cuban on finding and understanding your why-"Time is the one asset we don't own, we can't buy, and we can never get back."

Pitbull on tapping into your inner power-"A lot of people feel that to be powerful is to exude strength. I think it's the total opposite. To be powerful is to be powerless. It's when you give everybody what you got."

Whether you're an innovator working to turn your big idea into a reality, a professional looking to land a major promotion, or a busy parent trying to find more time to focus on what's really important to you, Daymond shows you how to shift your power and energy towards positive change.

Angie’s comments: This is an insightful look into business and everyday life (when aren't you trying to influence, negotiate, or have relationships?). The examples are good and address the points he is trying to make. I felt inspired to make some changes of my own while reading this book.

Recommended for readers interested in business.

Cover image for Don't overthink it : make easier decisions, stop second-guessing, and bring more joy to your life

Don't Overthink It: Make Easier Decisions, Stop Second-Guessing, and Bring More Joy to Your Life by Anne Bogel

Summary: We've all been there: stuck in a cycle of what-ifs, plagued by indecision, paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong. Nobody wants to live a life of constant overthinking, but it doesn't feel like something we can choose to stop doing. It feels like something we're wired to do, something we just can't escape. But is it?

Anne Bogel's answer is no. Not only can you overcome negative thought patterns that are repetitive, unhealthy, and unhelpful, you can replace them with positive thought patterns that will bring more peace, joy, and love into your life. In Don't Overthink It, you'll find actionable strategies that can make an immediate and lasting difference in how you deal with questions both small--Should I buy these flowers?--and large--What am I doing with my life?

More than a book about making good decisions, Don't Overthink It offers you a framework for making choices you'll be comfortable with, using an appropriate amount of energy, freeing you to focus on all the other stuff that matters in life.

Angie’s comments: This is an encouraging and thought-provoking look at making decisions in your life. Bogel uses great, and relatable, examples to illustrate her points. The questions at the end of each chapter helps with seeing how the book can help you. Although the target audience appears to be women, the book and the examples can be used by anyone. The author does have a slight Christian focus at the end, but only in terms of how it relates to her life.

Recommended for anyone.

Anti-Diet

Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating by Christy Harrison

Summary: Reclaim your time, money, health, and happiness from our toxic diet culture with groundbreaking strategies from a registered dietitian, journalist, and host of the "Food Psych" podcast.

68 percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90% of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66% of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it?

The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others. It's sexist, racist, and classist, yet this way of thinking about food and bodies is so embedded in the fabric of our society that it can be hard to recognize. It masquerades as health, wellness, and fitness, and for some, it is all-consuming.

In Anti-Diet, Christy Harrison takes on diet culture and the multi-billion-dollar industries that profit from it, exposing all the ways it robs people of their time, money, health, and happiness. It will turn what you think you know about health and wellness upside down, as Harrison explores the history of diet culture, how it's infiltrated the health and wellness world, how to recognize it in all its sneaky forms, and how letting go of efforts to lose weight or eat "perfectly" actually helps to improve people's health -- no matter their size. Drawing on scientific research, personal experience, and stories from patients and colleagues, Anti-Diet provides a radical alternative to diet culture, and helps readers reclaim their bodies, minds, and lives so they can focus on the things that truly matter.

Angie’s comments: Read this for an interesting view of our society and culture relating to body size, health and food. Although I didn't agree with everything stated in the book, I learned a lot and enjoyed reading Harrison's views.

Recommended for readers who are interested in diets and food.

Napkin Finance

Napkin Finance: Build Your Wealth in 30 Seconds or Less by Tina Hay

Summary: A handy crash course in personal finance, Napkin Finance is the groundbreaking guide everyone needs to help them manage their money and feel more secure.

Surveys have found that two thirds of Americans can't pass a basic financial literacy test, and nine in ten believe personal finance should become a required high school course. Tina Hay understands the confusion. While attending Harvard Business School, she struggled to keep up with classmates-many of whom came from the banking world-when it came to understanding jargon and numbers-heavy concepts. Tina developed a visual learning strategy using sketches and infographics that helped her succeed in her studies and master even the most complex financial topics.

Since then, Tina founded Napkin Finance, a thriving company built on the concept of taking seemingly overwhelming topics--such as budgeting, investments, and retirement accounts--and turning them into simple, skimmable explanations. Now, she's synthesized the most important content into this personal finance handbook. Napkin Finance includes dozens of individual learning modules, on topics ranging from credit scores to paying off student loans to economics and blockchain.

The first illustrated guide that makes finance fun and accessible, Napkin Finance can help even the most numbers-phobic reader learn about complex financial topics without dying of boredom.

Angie’s comments: A introduction to many aspects of finances, this is great for those who are beginners. There are many illustrations, and the concepts are explained concisely.

Recommended for readers who want a basic understanding of finance, from credit scores to investing to banks.

Women with Money

Women with Money: The Judgment-Free Guide to Creating the Joyful, Less Stressed, Purposeful (and Yes, Rich) Life You Deserve by Jean Chatzky

Summary: Ask successful women what they want from their money and they'll tell you: independence, security, choices, a better world, and-oh yes-way less stress, not just for themselves but for their kids, spouses, partners, parents, and friends. Through a series of Happy Hour discussions (when money is the topic, wine helps) and one-on-one conversations, Jean Chatzky gets women to open up about the one topic we still never talk about. Then she flips the script and charts a pathway to this joyful, purpose-filled life that today's women not only want but also, finally, have the resources to afford.

Chatzky's candid three-part plan-formed through detailed reporting with the world's top economists, psychiatrists, behaviorists, financial planners, and attorneys, as well as her own two decades of experience in the field-involves helping women understand themselves in relation to money. Readers will wrap their hands around tactical solutions to get paid what they deserve, become inspired to start businesses, invest for tomorrow, make their money last, and then use that money to foster secure relationships, raise independent and confident children, send those kids to college, care for their aging parents, leave a legacy, and-best of all-bring them joy!

Angie’s comments: Good, basic financial advice for women, and for anyone really. The chapters on helping your parents as they get older and thinking about what legacy you want to leave are quite good and got me started thinking about some of the issues.

The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money

Then There Was You by Miranda Liasson

Summary: You're smart. So don't be dumb about money. Pinpoint your biggest money blind spots and take control of your finances with these tools from CBS News Business Analyst and host of the nationally syndicated radio show Jill on Money, Jill Schlesinger.

Do you have a "friend" who is super smart, has a great career, holds a graduate degree, has even saved a chunk of money for retirement, but who keeps making the same dumb mistakes when it comes to money? Is this "friend" you?

After decades working as a Wall Street trader, investment adviser, and money expert for CBS, Jill Schlesinger reveals thirteen costly mistakes you're probably making right now with your money without even knowing it. Drawing on heartfelt personal stories (yes, money experts screw up, too), Schlesinger argues that it's not lack of smarts that causes even the brightest, most accomplished people among us to behave like financial dumb-asses, but simple emotional blind spots. So if you've made well-intentioned mistakes like saving for college for your kids before you've saved for your own retirement, or taken on too much risk when you invest, you've come to the right place. And if you've avoided uncomfortable moments such as sitting down to draft a will or planning long-term care for an aging parent, this is the book for you.

By breaking bad habits and following Schlesinger's pragmatic and accessible rules for managing your finances, you can save tens, even hundreds, of thousands of dollars, not to mention avoid countless sleepless nights.

Practical, no-nonsense, and often counterintuitive, The Dumb Things Smart People Do with Their Money tells you what you really need to hear about retirement, college financing, insurance, real estate, and more. It might just be the smartest investment you make all year.

Angie’s comments: Filled with lots of examples and advice, this is a good book for anyone interested in managing their money. I especially liked the chapter about caring for your parents, as it brought up a lot of ideas and issues that I wouldn't have considered.
