An Experiment in Treason
Summary: Sir
John Fielding has trailed a packet of controversial letters from London to the
colony of Massachusetts. But when the suspect in the theft is found dead, Sir
John turns his eye on the possible involvement of Benjamin Franklin.
Angie's Comments: Yes,
that is Benjamin Franklin on the cover. The plot is based on true events
involving Franklin and stolen letters. For more information, see the Author’s
Note at the end.
The mystery is intriguing because there
is little evidence at first, and politicians play a role in promoting and
hindering the investigation. With the strained relationship between the
American colonies and Britain, solving the mystery becomes problematic.
I enjoy the characters of Jeremy
Procter, the narrator of the novel, and his boss Sir John Fielding. Readers
will see a different side to Franklin than the one shown in history class.
Recommended for readers of
historical English mysteries.
